Over the holidays we had the chance to go to Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., to pick up and then drop off family.
While waiting for them to arrive on Dec. 24 we were intrigued by a display in the USO Lounge. It was a gingerbread and candy replica of the
White House done in stunning detail. According to the USO host, the Windows Catering Company did the display. It was complete with a sign asking visitors to not nibbler the building! The host was gracious enough to take our picture and said he had done it for a large number of visitors.
According to the USO website, it’s mission is to strengthen “America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.” That service is vital to the support we all can provide our active duty and military veterans. When we took our family back to Dulles for their return flight, we stopped at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum near the airport. For any aviation buff, or just someone who thinks flying is cool, this is a must visit. The center contains a variety of exhibits going back to the dawn of flight to the SR-71 Blackbird and the space shuttle Discovery.
Walking around the massive building you get to see how far flight has come since its inception and learn about some of the people involved in its evolution. For information about the center, go to https://airandspace.si.edu/udvar-hazy-center.
